mac not shutting down after sierra update

I updated my MacBook Air (13-inch Early 2015) to Sierra. After the update, it doesn't shutdown or restart. If I click on shutdown, my screen turns black and the keyboard back light is on. The shutdown never completes. Its the same case during restart too.
